Edinburgh - Lonely Planet Travel Video

Back

Lonely Planet author George Dunford sums up Edinburgh. More Europe than Britain probably because of the month-long Edinburgh Arts Festival every August, the city is sophisticated Scotland. Pub culture is the backbone of society, making it easy to meet the locals. Try scotch or hand-made Real Ale but steer clear of football in conversation until you find out which team they go for!

my advice is DO NOT go during the Fringe Festival bcuz all the hotels will be like $300.00 usd/night!! If you go any other time they are way more reasonable. And it was soooo crowded you could hardly move around. I did see a Coppucino stand and it looked like the Tardis!!

How can you advise people not to go during the festival?? OK, it is expensive to stay there for a long time, but it's deffinetly worth going during August.

well I am a believer in travelling OFF PEAK to minimze expenses and crowds. When I learned the festival was going on I changed my trip to Glasgow which is also totally awesome. I will go back to Edinburgh when it is not fringe time.
